Some more pictures... 6/30/2014

Check out the flying lizards??!!!

Happy 4th!! 6/30/2014

Heya Family,

Sounds like you all are doing well! Thanks for all the updates! Thanks for the updates on the world cup, hopefully the us can beat belgium. That cruise up to Alaska will be sweet. Take lots of pictures, and I am glad Aiden is doing well. All you guys are in my prayers. :)

So this last week we ate dinner with the Eagers and they told us about a museum down in our area. I had no idea it was there, but it is free and all you have to do is set up an appointment so we went this morning. It was pretty sweet.

It is the Bolacks musuem. He has a ranch down in our area and I guess he came to farmington a long time ago and struck oil and then spent most of his life hunting so he has an incredible display of animals here. Pretty awesome stuff. Oh yeah, the one right behind me is real....

Yep, didn't end to well....... Anyway

They even had a little two headed sea turtle...

But anyway, it was an awesome museum. We will all definitely need to go there some day.

This week was good. It was definitely a week of cancelations though. Haha I think we had 9 appointments cancel.

4th of July here should be pretty good. I guess the city does their fireworks on the 3rd at night and the at the Bolacks ranch they do a huge firework show on the 4th. All the people we have talked to say that bolacks firework show in better than the cities. It is supposed to be right on the mesa south of farmington, so we will probably have a really good view of it. Elder yazzie bought some of the mormon messages so we have been watching some of those. They are sweet! here is one you should watch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l70e1TfN34w

We ate dinner with a pretty awesome family this week named the Palfreymans. We went to a spanish baptism where it was all in spanish. Pretty cool experience. We tracted plenty, and tracted into a lot of spanish speakers. My spanish is quite rusty and I don't even know how to speak spanish so it was pretty funny trying to talk to them. Some of them definitely speak english but just didn't wanna talk to us but some only spoke spanish for sure.

We did some service this week and probably one of the best lessons we had was one where we shared the gospel of jesus christ. The 3rd lesson we teach. The spirit was there. You could feel it.

Anyways, I love all you guys and hope you are doing well! I hope you all have a great week!

6/23/2014

Hi you wonderful peoples,

This week went pretty good. I already let you know about some of it, but here is a little bit more about what happened from our week.

Morale of the story for this week. Make sure to get more consecrated oil before you run out. :) This week we gave a good amount of blessings, and my little container for consecrated oil ran out.. So I had to keep asking people if they had some on them. Luckily it all worked out and I went and bought some more today.

We had a lot of cancellations this week, which is normal for missionary work. We are trying to find some more people to teach since we cover both sides of the ward now.

We helped some people move this week. Service is always good.

We had a pretty cool experience with a man we taught this week. He has many health problems that he never would have dreamed he would ever get and so the last few years have been super tough on him. But he was talking about even though it is hard for him to say it, in a way all those things have been blessings. If those things wouldn't have happened he probably wouldn't have ever started paying tithing and he said that he probably never would have read the Book of Mormon all the way through. But because of all that has happened, he has done those things.

I am glad to hear that aiden's surgery went well.

I hope you all are doing well. Thanks a ton for the emails and support. They mean a ton to me. I hope you all have a fantastic week!!

Happy Fathers Day 6/16/2014

Hello Family,

Before my email I "mustache" you a question......

On second thought I think I will "shave" it for later... :)

They changed the grooming standards for the mission so I grew a mustache. I think it came in pretty nice. ;)

Well Happy Late Fathers day dad! I hope it was a good one for you.

Happy bday to Aiden as well! I can't believe he is already 2 yrs old!

Thanks for the updates on the wcup and bball. I hope you all are doing well!

One of the senior couples in the mission told me that he read my blog haha, so I guess people really do read it.

This week was pretty good. So on transfers, Elder Short is going to be a zone leader in Page and Elder Yazzie and I are staying here in 4th ward. They aren't splitting the ward or anything so we will have a lot of area to cover this transfer. I am sad to see Elder Short go though! He only has 6 weeks left, it is pretty crazy. My trainer Elder Soper only has six weeks left as well.

We had the mission tour this last thursday where Elder Carlson of the seventy came. It was awesome! It went from 9 to 5 and there was a lot of good teachings all throughout. A lot of things were said that applied specifically to me, so I am hoping to apply some of the things that I learned. Some of the main topics were obedience and consecration. Elder Carlson shared a story that I really like. He talked about how when he was younger, him and his younger brother would have a lot of work they would have to do around the house. They would get a lot of it done and then their dad would ask them to come help him with more of the work that needed to be done around their home. Usually their respondings would be murmurings, and how they had already done so much and how they didn't want to do anymore. Their father would say in a very kind way, Alright, if you don't want to then it's fine you don't have to. Then they would get all guilty, and unwillingly say, fine we will come help you. Their father would say, Really, I don't want to you to come help unless you want to. Stay here, it is fine I can do it. They would kinda go back and forth like that until the dad would say, " I don't want you to come help with the garden unless you want to come help with the garden. I don't want you to just do the work but I want you to want to do it." Elder Carlson talked about how that changed just doing chores into an activity that really changed them. It is the same with a mission. I can be out here and not want to do any of the work, but still do all of it. But it won't change me one bit. I will be the same person that I left home as. Although I might have worked hard, I didn't change a bit. That is why consecration is so important. If I do the work and have the desire or want to do the work, then it will change me. If I can give everything to God, then God can make me a much better person then I ever could by myself. And I really think if I love all of you enough and my future wife and kids, then I will put God first in my life so I can be the person God wants me to be and the person my family needs me to be. My sins are great, but I am grateful for repentance and the atoning sacrifice of Christ. Without God there wouldn't really be any hope, but with Him there is all hope for the future, for everyone. Needlessto say the mission tour was awesome.

Thanks for all the updates on your lives! It is great to hear from all of you. I hope you all have a fantastic week!

Love, Elder Scott Krstyen

ps. Do you like our mustaches?

This mormon message is a favorite of mine. Hope you enjoy it . https://www.lds.org/media-library/video/2012-01-014-the-will-of-god?lang=eng.

Here are some others ones I like. I hope they can brighten your day!

6/9/2014

Heya family,

Hope you are all doing really well.

Happy Fathers day this next sunday dad! I hope it is a good one!

This week ended up being a pretty good week. Since we cover twice the area we used to there is a lot of people to go see.

Elder Yazzie is up from Idaho. He has been out about 14 months or so. We all do pretty well together. He has a lot of family on the reservation.

We met with an older couple named the Henriches who are just awesome. They mention often about how much the Lord has blessed them. They talk about the ups and the downs of life but how we all have something to learn from them.

We had dinner with a family here that owns an orchard in the farmington area. They are awesome. We had some green chile enchiladas, which were delicious and on our way out they gave us some homemade apple cider. We are excited to try it out :).

Unfortunately Jewel and Matthew weren't able to make it out to church, but they still seem to be doing well, so we are excited to see them again this next week.

Reading through the standard works is going pretty well. I have been able to keep up so I am pretty happy about that. Right now I am in Joshua 5 I think. There is some pretty sweet stuff in the old testament, but definitely some pretty crazy stuff too. Haha some of the chapters about the law of moses were killer!

Oh by the way, transfers are this Saturday, so I will let you know what happens.

Working out is up and downs sometimes but I am working on being more consistent at it.

Family history has been sweet! I found the krstyen/prostrandy pdf dad. I updated familysearch. Anyway how is it going for you guys?? Let me know what you find. Just reading some of the stories of our ancestors really uplifts me. It is crazy some of the trials they went through, but they never gave up.

This week Elder Carlsen from the Seventy is visiting our mission for a mission tour. It is supposed to go from 9 in the morning to 5 in the evening haha. It will be one long sweet mission tour.

By the way, on the thought of college I am still thinking about where I want to go to school, either at the u or y.I kinda want to live at home and go to the u but I haven't decided yet. Elder short said that pres batt could allow it for a few weeks, like if I need to come home two weeks sooner for school, and I asked pres batt about it and he kinda said that going home a little sooner was more for the benefit of the mission/ not for the missionary so he said it depends. Kinda confusing but I talked to sister batt about it and she said to find out when the deadlines for applying were and then I can talk to them about it more. I am sure the deadlines are coming up in a few months or so. When does winter semester start for the u and for the y? I just need to know a few more of the details and I can talk some more about it. Hah it is hard cause I can't look it up on the computer since we are only supposed to be on the church sites. So if you could let me know about that, it would be great.

Anyway, I have been working on strengthening my faith and having better prayers and studies. And a big chunk of that includes becoming better at revelation and feeling the spirit. I have found out that my faith wasn't quite as strong as I believed it was when I came out here, but I have learned a lot from all that has happened. I think I have learned and am learning more of who I want to be, what I want to do with my life, and the kind of father/husband I want to be. I still have a ton to learn. But I'm trying. I have made a lot of mistakes and I have seen a lot of mistakes that people make everyday, but with Christ there is always hope for a brighter future. I believe that. I believe what Christ taught. I believe it is true. And I love you guys all a ton. You mean a ton to me. I am grateful for all the support and help you have given me. It's made a great difference in my life. Just know that I think about you and pray for you. I hope you guys have a great week!!!

Ya'aat'eeh Family 6/2/2014

Well this week was awesome. We were able to do a lot. Of course it had its ups and downs but thats the usual. This week we ending getting Elder Yazzie with us. And now we are the only set on missionaries in 4th ward. So we have twice the area to cover so we have been staying busy. Elder Yazzie is great and of course elder short is as well.

Family history was good this week. Didn't find to much new but just trying to find some of the records of people that we have. How's it going for you guys?

We helped a man in the ward get his swamp cooler up and running. It took quite a while because it is getting older, but we got it all to work out. Working out has been going good. I don't do p90x everyday but I usally do it 3 or 4 times in the week. Hopefully I end up in good shape haha. Personal study has been going well. Usually I read 15 mins PMG, 15 Bom, 15 New Testament, and 15 OT. I am trying to finish the whole standard works in 90 days. You have to read 28 pages a day. Right now I am in Exodus towards the end where they are talking about the tabarnacle. Hopefully I can keep going strong :). I have been writing in my journal too, so I am pretty happy about that. Right now I am in Mosiah 18 and 1 Thessolonians 2. Jewel didn't make it to church this last sunday cause he grandma wasn't doing very well so she won't be baptized this week but hopefully in the upcoming weeks. We got asked to give a blessing in the hospital yesterday for a man out from Mexican Hat. This time going to the hospital was a very humbling experience. Made me think of all the blessings that I do have. Hopefully I can try to be more humble and less prideful haha. We have a busy schedule for this upcoming week so I am excited for it. This week is the 5th week of the transfer so we will see what happens next transfer.

Well I love you guys!! I hope you are doing well. Stay strong and keep fighting the good fight!

Love, Elder Scott Krstyen
